Ladies, if we're all super honest with each other, right here right now, one thing we all envy is gorgeous, dewy, glowing skin that seems to surround us everywhere we turn. As someone who has struggled with hormonal acne for years, I know how frustrating it can be to live in a world of photoshopped women who seem to be flawless while we're over here sulking over blackheads.
Can you relate?
Well, in the years that I have been getting healthy, transitioning to a green beauty regime, and obsessing over looking good no less than ever before, I've discovered some really fantastic ways to achieve better skin (and I've splurged on a lot of overpriced creams and lotions that promised what they certainly did not deliver) with totally natural products you probably have in your house right now.
Here are a few simple ways you can care for your skin outwardly with these DIY mask recipes. These have helped me tremendously (especially in the cold, dry winter months!).
1. Avocado Yogurt Mask - you get Omega-3 fatty acids (think moisturized like a baby's bottom) and Vitamin C from the avocado, exfoliation from the lactic acid in the yogurt, and a gorgeous dew factor from the humectant in the honey.
1/2 ripe avocado
1 tablespoon goat's milk yogurt (I use Redwood Hill Farm)
1 tablespoon manuka honey (I use Wedderspoon Organic travel honey packs)
Smash avocado with a fork. Mix in yogurt and honey till smooth. Slather a thick layer on clean skin. Let sit for 15 mins. Gently remove with warm water and a washcloth. Splash cool water on your face, pat dry with a clean towel, then follow up with your favorite moisturizer (I use ACURE's Sensitive Facial Cream with argan oil and probiotic) or organic coconut oil.
2. Coffee Peppermint Mask - this is probably my most favorite DIY mask, ever! Not only does it smell like dessert but the antioxidants from the coffee and cinnamon help to exfoliate and diminish scars, slough off dead skin cells and leave you with a moisturized, soft complexion. This is like a gentle wake up for your skin. I'm hooked.
1/4 cup fresh organic coffee grounds
2 tablespoons coconut oil
1 tablespoon manuka honey
dash of cinnamon
3-4 drops organic peppermint essential oil
Combine all ingredients until evenly distributed. Spread a thick layer on a clean face. While you're spreading the mask you can make gently circles with your fingers to exfoliate your skin. Let sit for 15 mins then use warm water and a gentle wash cloth to remove the mask (do this over your sink because it can create a big mess). Splash cool water, pat dry with a clean towel, then finish with your favorite moisturizer.
3. Honey Cinnamon Mask - manuka honey is amazing for those pestering under-the-skin blemishes that hurt and swell. Instead of scarring up your face by trying to squeeze and pick, use manuka honey to ease the cystic blemish and let the cinnamon work as a powerful antioxidant to protect against free radicals. Fresh lemon juice also helps reduce previous scarring.
1-2 tablespoons manuka honey
1 teaspoon organic cinnamon powder
splash of fresh lemon juice.
Combine all ingredients until smooth. Spread layer of mask on clean skin and let sit for 10-15 mins. Gently remove with warm water + a gentle wash cloth. Splash face with cool water, pat dry with a clean towel and follow with your favorite moisturizer.
4. Turmeric Yogurt Mask - turmeric has incredible anti-inflammatory properties, cleans and protects skin from free-radical damage.
1 tbsp. plain goat's milk yogurt
1 tbsp. clear honey
1/2 tbsp. turmeric
Pinch of ground organic cinnamon
Mix ingredients until smooth in a paste. Layer paste over your face and neck and let sit for 5 minutes. Remove with warm water and a gentle wash cloth. Splash with cool water, pat dry with a clean towel and follow up with your favorite moisturizer.
**To get the best results from any of these masks I recommend taking a shower prior so you're squeaky clean, then steam your face with gentle steam + your favorite essential oil for 5 mins to open up pores.
**Use clean fingertips to apply your chosen mask!! Its important to keep the area and your hands clean as you'll have open pores and you don't want bacteria going right on your skin.
**Steer clear of your eyes when putting these masks on.
**Get comfortable, close your eyes and relax.
**Use one mask 1-2 times a week and no more. You can alternate between different masks, just be careful not to overdo it and space out masks several a days. (For example: try the Coffee Peppermint on Monday and then Saturday try the Turmeric Yogurt Mask. Alternate and find what works for you best.)
**If you're struggling with adult acne that is embarrassing and painful, you might want to consider taking conventional dairy, grains + gluten, processed sugar, and hydrogenated oils out of your diet. Beautiful skin starts from within, and I'll share more with you later on how you can get to the root cause of what may be causing your breakouts in another blog post.
Let me know if you try any of these masks and how you like it!
