Ah! The price of beauty we pay. How obsessive are you over the way your skin looks? I'm not here to pretend... I'm on the #LOOKGOODFEELGOOD train full stop. My skin has been an evolving story for years... after stopping birth control in my final semester of college after 5 years on the pill, I experienced something I had never experienced before: acne. Oy vey! The struggle I went through to finally realize that it's all connected, and that true, beautiful, glowing skin starts on the inside, was a process. My skin isn't perfect by all means, and it has it flare ups like anyone else, but really understanding what practices allow you to glow from within have been one of my deepest interests since I began having these issues. It led me to realize how harmful and toxic cosmetics can be, depending on what you use. The specific practices I follow are a whole other mega series in itself, but I wanted to share with you some of the products that I use on my skin and body. This time of year, at least north of the Equator, we're headed into the eye of the storm: harsh temperatures outdoors + blasting heat indoors. Our skin and hair takes a bad beating, and dehydration is something we fight daily (which of course is why my pink Nalgene is refilled at least 4x a day).
I do not play cheap when it comes to my skin whatsoever. I would never put drugstore products on my skin, not because I'm a snob but because I love the way it feels to use luxurious, natural, organic, nourishing products... and I'm #TEAMNOTOXINS.
Your skin is your largest organ, and whatever creams, lotions, deodorants, sprays or cosmetics you put on it are absorbed right into the blood stream. A very big problem that many women are experiencing directly connects chronic hormonal imbalances with the highly toxic chemicals found laden in the cosmetic industry. Ever hear of endocrine disrupters? You need to read this to understand why your cosmetic lineup may need a total makeover ASAP.
There are a lot of homemade beauty masks, etc. but today we're leaving it up to the pros...
Check out some of my favorite beauty products (links are shopable)...
Primal Pit Paste Deodorant - You've tried em all, right? I'll be honest, most organic/natural deodorants are absolutely terrible. Some of them leave you smelling like a teenager, others sting the hell out of your pits and have you running back to your Dove. Not this stuff, no way. I've searched for years and I've found it! Pit Paste lasts through CrossFit workouts and doesn't always require a dozen re-applications. My favorite is the Orange Creamsicle scent. I'm BEYOND impressed. My guy and I even share the same deodorant. Weird? Oh baby, we're just getting started...
ACURE Organics Argan Oil Shampoo & Conditioner - I have really fine hair.. and A LOT of it. Hydration and smoothing properties are important to me, otherwise I'll spend half a day just combing through knots. Most organic shampoos that I've tried are really pricey for sub-par moisture and quality, but ACURE has really low prices and leaves my hair smooth without dire need of a leave-in conditioner. YES! Total win.
Tata Harper Replenishing Nutrient Complex - You want glow? This little bottle delivers, and it's worth every penny. This serum is a multivitamin for your skin, and really visibly makes a difference. I'm religious about my liquid daily vitamins - the one I ingest and the one I apply to my face.
evanhealy French Rose Clay Mask - I'm a recovering perfectionist... the kind of girl who could rival SATC's Charlotte for her obsession with her pores. I literally cannot (and do not) own a magnified mirror, because I could spend hours just staring into the darn thing. Nonetheless, the removal of dead skin cells, blackheads, debris and other unpleasant imposters is important... and just in the past year I've turned to clay. Love it, and honestly, I really just love the girly pink hue of evanhealy's product. Just be careful not to apply more than once a week, because clay can dry you out fast. I'll even spot treat when needed if I don't want a full-face mask.
Activated Charcoal - This stuff is the craziest, coolest, trendiest beauty product right now. I remember trying an activated charcoal cleanser a few years ago that Michael Todd's Organics sent me and loved it... but then I just kinda forgot about it. MY BAD YA'LL! You can brush your teeth with it, make a facemask out of it, or ingest in capsules for detoxing purposes (remember beauty comes from within, right?). You can read more FAQ about it here. I have some in my cabinet at all times. Here's a mask I make with it... LOVE it for clearing up blackheads and getting that overall glow.
Combine the following ingredients in a bowl:
1 teaspoon activated charcoal powder
1 teaspoon purified water or rosewater
1 teaspoon aloe vera gel or juice
4 drops organic tea tree essential oil
1 pinch super fine sea salt
Apply with your fingertips on a clean face, let dry, and remove after about 10-15 mins with warm water and a gentle washcloth. You may need to use some organic jojoba oil to remove any remaining from your hairline, or hard to clean areas. This stuff is MESSY, so be extra careful and wear a t-shirt you don't care about staining. Follow with your favorite face oil and moisturizer. And GLOW.
Cheers to toxic-free complexions and heads and pits,
